What materiality means for smaller entities

How auditors set thresholds on SME engagements—and why a small misstatement can still matter to a lender.

Materiality is not a single magic percentage. On smaller Taiwanese companies, auditors often start from revenue or total assets, then adjust for user sensitivity—especially when a bank covenant sits near the edge.

Qualitative factors still apply. A misstatement that flips a profit into a loss, or that misstates related-party disclosure, can be material even when the dollar amount looks modest.

Management can help by flagging areas of estimation: warranty provisions, slow-moving stock, and collectability of receivables. Clear estimates reduce last-minute debates during closing meetings.

Ask your engagement partner how performance materiality will be used on sampling. Understanding that link helps your team pull the right supporting invoices the first time.
